Gabrielle van Rijn

Narrative Marriage & Family Therapist

I was born and raised in Amsterdam, a city that has shaped my worldview. My parents settled here after having lived in Argentina. I too developed a deep desire to experience the world and immerse myself in different cultures. I lived in Buenos Aires and Barcelona with my then husband, who has both French and Spanish heritage. Together, we raised two ‘third culture’ children who grow up with influences from multiple cultures. After many years together, my husband and I parted ways, and I recognize that our different backgrounds shaped both our relationship and its eventual conclusion. My personal experiences have provided me with a deep understanding of the complexities and rewards that come with living a multicultural life.

It’s this experience that’s at the heart of why I began working with expats. I find the work deeply fulfilling, as it allows me to integrate my personal experiences of navigating different cultural landscapes and raising a multi-cultural family into my professional practice. I understand the challenges and joys that come with living in a foreign culture, and I’m able to connect with my clients to support them through their own cross-cultural experiences.

Educational Background and Work Experience

I completed my Master’s in Mental Healthcare at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences in 2002 and continued my professional development by earning a post-Master’s degree in systemic therapy from RINO in 2010.

Before opening my private practice in 2013, I worked across various mental healthcare centres, with individuals as well as families and groups. Throughout my career, I have gained experience in a variety of therapeutic modalities, including psychoanalytic therapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), and narrative therapy. This background has led me to adopt an eclectic therapeutic approach. I draw upon a range of methods and techniques tailored to each client’s unique situation and needs. I firmly believe in the transformative power of language and communication, which is why I am particularly drawn to narrative therapy. This approach allows clients to retell their personal stories, reframe their past, and envision a more empowered future.

One of my specialties is working with individuals who have (adult) ADHD and/or ASS, as well as their families, to understand and navigate the significant impact neurodiversity can have on relationships and daily life.

I offer therapy sessions both in-person in Amsterdam and Barcelona as online. My services are available in multiple languages, including English, Dutch, French and Spanish.
