Ooshani Suma

Co-founder Marriage & Family Therapist

I was born and raised in California as the daughter of immigrant parents. My love of travel and cultural connection eventually led me to embark on a new adventure—moving to the Netherlands in 1996 with my Dutch husband. Having experienced the challenges of relocation firsthand, I understand what it means to leave behind family, friends, culture, language, and professional networks.

Building a new life abroad can be deeply rewarding, yet also demanding. Over the years, I’ve navigated the complexities of a bicultural relationship, raised bilingual children, and adjusted to life in a new culture. These personal experiences have profoundly shaped my perspective as a therapist and strengthened my belief in our capacity to adapt, heal, and thrive through change.

Education & Experience

I hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Irvine, and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania. In the U.S., I primarily worked with adolescents in residential programs and high schools.

After relocating to the Netherlands, I earned a post-master’s degree in systemic therapy from the Lorentzhuis in Haarlem (2013). I am a certified second-level EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) therapist, accredited by the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT). In addition, I have completed Levels 1 and 2 of the Gottman Method, am a trained EMDR practitioner, and am currently pursuing further training in schema therapy.

For more than 20 years, I have worked across a wide range of social service settings in Amsterdam, supporting individuals and families from diverse backgrounds. My experience includes working with refugees, individuals with developmental challenges, and both survivors and perpetrators of domestic violence. I also have extensive experience working with the expat community, helping individuals and couples navigate adjustment issues, cultural transitions, and complex divorces—always with a focus on the well-being of children.

My Approach

Finding the right therapist can be challenging. The connection between client and therapist—whether it’s a shared cultural understanding or simply feeling a natural “click”—can make all the difference in the success of therapy. My approach is open, compassionate, and culturally sensitive.

As a native English-speaking therapist, I offer therapy and counseling for individuals, couples, and families. I also provide training and workshops on topics such as relationship dynamics and the escalation process in conflict.

Sessions are available in person at our centrally located office in Amsterdam, or online. I am fluent in both English and Dutch.
