There are many types of therapy and even more therapists to choose from. Finding the right therapy, which fits you and your situation, can therefore be a challenge, especially when living in a foreign country. Rather than a specific type of therapy, it is more important to find a therapist with whom you feel at ease and who can trust.

    Systemic Therapy

Seeing an individual as part of a whole and acknowledging the importance of understanding the context of the situation is the reason systemic therapy is used by the Expat Counseling Center (ECC). Systemic therapy (for individual, couples and family therapy) is the identification of destructive interactional patterns in a relationship and the exploration of finding ways to change them. Considering that a person’s social system can have a large impact in one’s life, we strive to engage the other members of the family (partner, children, parents) when desired and when possible.

Our approach to therapy encompasses a number of things:

    • Providing a safe space in which to explore and share difficult feelings.
    • Facilitating better communication by enhancing listening and expressive skills.
    • Exploring individual and family histories to better understand the nature of the dynamics.
    • Identifying current stressors and triggers and working on resolving impasses.

In addition to utilizing systemic therapy, our therapists are also trained in the following specializations:

    • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
    • EFT (Emotional Focused Therapy)
    • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)
    • Solution Focused Therapy
